City Simphonies

Video installation

Is a site specific video installation for a group show at nomadic art space in Miami. City Symphonies were an early modernist film genre documenting the life and rhythm of burgeoning cities such as New York, Moscow and Paris. The films "A Man With a Movie Camera" By Dziga Vertov, "Manhatta" by Paul Strand and "A Propos de Nice" by Jean Vigo, were screened next to each other in a building in development near downtown Miami, right in the moment all the new high rises were being built. In the background, visible in the windows opposite to the screenings. The sounds of the city musicalized the dark raw space, giving it a ominous background to the modernist promise of progress.

MLK: A road trip

Stop Motion silent video installation

Working with footage from google street view, I created silent road films by screen capturing google’s images and animating them. For MLK I photographed all of the streets named after Martin Luther King along states in the East of the United States. I could track that streets named after him in Southern states belonged to rural areas, lack of investment in reosurces and infracstructure is also reflected in the quality of the images, which changes as we head to Northern States, who honor the national hero in central, important city avenues. The road ends in Harlem, a historicly black area where signs of a globalization points to early stages of gentrification.

Peripheries

Stop Motion silent video installation

Working with footage from google street view, I created silent road films by screen capturing google’s images and animating them. For Peripheries I photographed the end of all roads all over the world. I did this by zooming in on the coastal areas of continents and finding the last photographs taken at street ends. Peripheries is a visual survey of what is found at the end of all roads, all around the world.

Skyscraper Index

Stop Motion silent video installation

Work ing with footage from google street view, I created silent road films by screen capturing google’s images and animating them. For the Skyscraper Index, I researched and tracked down all the tallest buildings in the world. I organized them by size, from the smaller to the biggest one.The video was installed in a monitor placed at hip level, so as the video progressed viewers could meassure how much bigger each building was from the previous one.
